Although Chinese is spoken by more people on the earth than any other language, it is in second place for use on the Internet.   English remains the most popular language, not least because so many people around the world speak English as their second language, and at present more web pages are written in English than in any other language.

To many British people, learning a foreign language is difficult, time-consuming and, to be honest, too much like hard work.  However, there are already many words taken from other languages which have been assimilated into everyday English without translation, yet everyone knows their meaning.

If you are travelling abroad with no way of making yourself understood, some Google-powered phones now have a translator function installed which can be activated by simply speaking the phrase you require into the phone and the phone will give you the translation either as text or in a computerised voice.

For many years, speculation was high that the language of the Eskimos had over 400 words for 'snow'.  This speculation was based on the idea that foreign cultures, especially 'primitive peoples', see the world in a different way.  This could not be summarily disregarded because, after all, Eskomos are surrounded by snow all the time.

The French newspaper La Tribune offers its non-French readers the opportunity to use machine translation to translate their articles.  For example, clicking on the American flag will give you a form of English.

If you are heading to Wales for a holiday this summer it might be worth brushing up on a few Welsh sayings and learning a bit of the Welsh language. Though the country is officially bi-lingual (English and Welsh) and more people speaks English than Welsh it's always worth knowing a few phrases, especially when visiting some areas which predominantly use Welsh such as areas of the north or east, or to simple fit in with the local and impress them down the pub with your knowledge.
